TW: death mention
daughter of hephaestus mother died in childbirth. rowan was raised by her aunt for as long as she could rememberno one had believed her mother when she’d spoke of a man with fire in his eyes. no one except her aunt, who promised in that hospital room years ago that she’d look after her daughterher grandparents are in the picture, but they keep their distance. in their eyes, rowan is the reason their daughter is gone (and not even the existence of their other daughter [rowan’s aunt] was enough for them to stay in touch; they’d always played favorites)grew up in seattle, wa. her aunt is a successful pastry chef who took a backseat to her own successes to raise herhad a pretty normal childhood. her aunt owns several bakeries throughout the country so she often traveled with her during school breakswould spend most of her summers in the kitchens tinkering with whatever she could get her hands on“keep her safe. don’t let them take her away.” her aunt didn’t know then who they were. not until rowan started mentioning eyes peering back at her in the darkshe’s gotten used to scraped up knees and feeling like her lungs are on fire, instinct telling her to run, run, run because she’s just a kid. what is an 11 year old going to do against a basilisk?she got more resourceful with age, figured out what worked and what didn’t. she fought smarter, not harder. all the while keeping it a secret from her auntshe didn’t want to burden the woman who’d loved her like her own, even as she steadily grew into her powerssome part of her aunt always knew rowan’s father was different. “otherworldly,” her sister had told her once, the weight of those words coming back to her when rowan set her birthday cake on fire at 6 years oldleft for kratos not only to protect her aunt, but to learn more about who she was and maybe even learn a thing or two about hephaestus along the waypersonality wise, rowan believes in the kindness of others. she thinks everyone has a heart, even if they don’t always show it. naivety, maybe, but she’s always been something of an optimisther mind is always going a mile a minute. she constantly has new ideas, thoughts racing to take shape as tech in her handsincredibly loyal, which can blindside her to other people’s faults. she’ll stand by you even at her own expenseis 100% the type of person you’d see sitting in the kitchen island at 3:45am eating frosted flakes because she couldn’t sleep“i’m gonna wing it,” rowan about something she should definitely not wingmore curious about her father than resentful; likes to think they’d have a good relationship if they ever metshe doesn’t like to think that she’s lonely, but ... it was lonely facing all of these new experiences alone. by the time she’d met another demigod, she’d already partially convinced herself that all the abnormal circumstances in her life were things she’d made up in her own headcareful with her words, doesn’t like to tear people down and would rather build them up instead (will laugh at a dad joke even if no one else in the room is)
